League of Ireland
Premier Division
83/200
The League of Ireland Premier Division is the top football league in Ireland, featuring ten
teams, including dominant clubs like Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk. Unlike for most
other European countries, the league runs from February to November with an emphasis
on exciting, fast-paced football and intense rivalries.
Clubs that finish high can gain access to the qualifying rounds of major European
competitions, although only on five occasions has an Irish team made it to the group
stage of one of these competitions. While the league operates on a smaller scale
compared to larger European leagues, it is known for fostering local talent and providing
a platform for young Irish players to develop.
With its geographic proximity to the English clubs, and its common language and culture,
the Irish Premier Division has been attracting interest from multi-club ownership groups.
What are the foreign player rules?
In the League of Ireland Premier Division, each club is allowed to have a maximum of 25
registered players on their squad, out of which up to eight can be classified as non-EU
players. Additionally, there is no specific limit on the number of EU players, but they must
be registered within the overall squad limit.
