Egyptian
Premier League
Egypt is a country with a proud footballing heritage. It was the first African and Arab
nation to qualify for the World Cup in 1934 and has seven African Cup of Nations titles,
making it the most successful nation in the competition’s history.
The Egyptian Premier League, Egypt’s top tier, was founded in 1948 and continues to
evolve with each passing season. Featuring 18 teams, including dominant clubs like Al
Ahly and Zamalek, the league is highly competitive and renowned for its vibrant
atmosphere and intense rivalries. Al Ahly is one of Africa's most successful clubs, with
numerous national and continental titles, while Pyramids FC has been a major disruptor
of late. The league has a strong tradition of developing local talent and is a significant
force in African football, often serving as a stepping stone for players looking to make an
impact on the international stage.
What are the foreign player rules?
Each Egyptian club can register up to 30 players, including five overseas players. At
youth level, clubs may have up to three foreign players per age group, but the first-team
limit remains five. Since 2009, foreign goalkeepers have been banned from the Egyptian
Premier League.
I am enjoying my time in Egypt - the club is very
professional, and I love the way that the players are looked
after. The standard of competition is high, and we compete
with the best teams across the Continent in the CAF
Champions League. I see why the Egyptian Premier League
is the best in Africa.
