Important Financial Considerations
The top tax rate in China is 45%
Players in China usually have net contracts, meaning their take-home
pay is fixed, with the club responsible for covering any tax changes.
Taxes are deducted before the salary is paid.
The risk of delayed or unpaid salaries is high. FIFPRO has warned
players about contractual violations, including unpaid salaries and
payment delays, by multiple Chinese clubs.
I had a great experience playing in China, and I would certainly
recommend it to other foreign players. But I’d also tell them to be
open-minded because it’s not easy at times. There were long flights
to away matches and strict rules and routines to follow. The food
was nice…a bit scary…though it actually tasted amazing!

First English player to move to
China from the Premier League
I was young when I moved to China, but I came here for
the challenge, and I’m enjoying it. I’ve won the league, I’ve
captained my country (having naturalised as Chinese), and
I’m getting to experience a new culture. The
professionalism of the clubs is growing all the time, and
foreign players are well looked after.
