Immigration Rules
Players use either the Temporary Activity Visa (Subclass 408), which can be granted for
up to two years, or the Work Visa (Subclass 482), which can be granted for up to four
years. The Work Visa is used by players in the A-League. There are no age requirements
for either visa. A residence permit will be granted for a period of up to two years. Clubs
wishing to engage a foreign player must have an international reputation for training elite
sportspeople.
Player Requirements
Endorsement by the Australian Sports Commission.
An agreed employment contract with an Australian club.
Health insurance.
For the Work Visa 482, the player must be paid no less than AUD 120,000 per annum.
For the Work Visa 482, the player does not have to show sufficient funds to enter
Australia but cannot be contracted by another club during the length of the visa.
Dependents
Dependents can accompany the player and will be granted a visa for up to two years,
during which time they can study and work without restriction.
Applications
Applications can be made from inside or outside Australia. New Zealanders can enter
without a visa. 50% of applications are decided in seven days. The process cannot be
expedited. It is possible after two years on the Work Visa to obtain prolonged residence
lasting five years.
