Super League 1
36/200
The Greek Super League 1 is Greece's top professional football division, renowned for its
fierce rivalries and passionate fans. Olympiacos leads with 47 league titles, while AEK
Athens, PAOK and Panathinaikos are also prominent former champions. The league
concludes with a play-off amongst the top six teams, with the winners qualifying for the
UEFA Champions League and the runners-up entering the UEFA Conference League.
Despite facing financial challenges and disruptions, the league continues to attract highprofile talent, such as Willian.
What are the foreign player rules?
The Greek Super League 1 permits clubs to have a maximum of eight overseas players
who do not hold EU or EEA citizenship. Out of these, at least five must be 23 or older.
Clubs with a 'B' team in Super League 2 can include four additional overseas players
(three plus one under 23). On matchdays, only five overseas players can be on the field,
but clubs can name up to six in the squad.
The Greek Super League has proven to be a great entry point
into Europe for foreign players. It is the ideal stepping stone
for talented young players looking to participate in a
competitive league which gives them exposure to the biggest
European clubs. And, of course, the country is beautiful and
full of culture.
