Immigration Rules
An overseas player who wants to play in the MLS will need to apply for a P-1 visa. This
visa category allows a player to move to the USA for up to five years. However, to meet
the threshold, the player must be internationally recognised within football. This means
they will have to show high-level achievements in football which are demonstrable by
skill or recognition that is substantially above the ordinary. The achievements must also
be renowned, leading or well-known in more than one country.
Player Requirements
An employment contract with a team that is part of the MLS.
Dependents
Dependents include spouses and unmarried children under 21 years old, and they can
apply for the P-4 visa that will match the duration of the player9s visa. Dependents may
study if the study is ancillary to the primary purpose of the residence. Employment is not
authorised under P-4 visa rules.
Applications
To enter the US in P-1 status, a visa stamp is required, which can only be obtained at a
US Embassy/Consulate outside the US. To enter the US in P-1 status after travelling
abroad, a visa stamp is required.
