Allsvenskan

The Allsvenskan is Sweden9s top professional football league, known for its passionate
fan culture and strong tradition of developing homegrown talent. Featuring 16 teams,
including historic clubs like Malmö FF, AIK, and IFK Göteborg, the league offers
competitive football with a balance of experienced players and emerging stars.
Malmö FF have been particularly dominant in recent years, winning seven titles in the
past 11 seasons. The title winners qualify for the Champions League qualifiers, while
second and third-place enter the Europa Conference League qualifiers.
What are the foreign player rules?
In the Allsvenskan, there is no explicit limit on the number of foreign players a club can
sign. However, match day squad regulations impose practical constraints. Each match
day squad consists of 18 players and must include at least nine 8home grown9 players.
Consequently, a maximum of nine foreign players can be included in a match day squad.
This rule ensures a balance between domestic and foreign talent on the field.
A 8home grown9 player is defined as one who has been registered with a Swedish club for
at least three years between the ages of 12 and 21. Players who do not meet this
requirement are considered non-home grown, regardless of nationality. Therefore, even
players from EU/EEA countries are subject to these regulations if they haven't been
developed within the Swedish football system. While EU/EEA nationals benefit from
freedom of movement within the EU, this does not exempt them from the home grown
player rules.
