Holland
Eredivisie
11/200
The Eredivisie is the top tier of professional football in Holland. Founded in 1956, it has
developed a reputation for its attacking style of play, dubbed 8Total Football9, and a
strong emphasis on youth development.
The league is also an attractive destination for more experienced players, offering a fanled footballing culture and access to top-tier European competitions, with the league
winner qualifying for the Champions League group stage and the runner-up qualifying for
the group stage play-offs.
Currently, in the Eredivisie, three teams can qualify for the UEFA Champions League. First
and second-place qualify automatically while third-place have a chance to enter the
competition through the Champions League qualifying round.
Some senior high-profile players to have made the switch to the Eredivisie in the last year
include Jordan Henderson, Wout Weghorst and Bertrand Traoré.
What are the foreign player rules?
In the Netherlands, football clubs face no restrictions on overseas players. However, nonEU players must adhere to Dutch regulations before registering with the Royal Dutch
Football Association (KNVB). There are no limits on the number of non-EU or EU players
(excluding Dutch nationals) that can be selected by a club.
