Immigration Rules
Players with EU nationality require a Registration Certificate if they intend to stay in
Portugal for between three months and five years. Non-EU players will need to apply for a
D1 Work Visa, which is valid for 120 days with two entries allowed, that will be
superseded by a residence permit valid for two years. This visa is open to all
nationalities, with no age restrictions. A governing body endorsement is not required by
the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
Player Requirements
An employment contract with a Portuguese club where they earn at least the
minimum wage.
A work permit issued to the club.
Health insurance.
Dependents
Dependents, including spouses, partners and children, may accompany the player.
Residence permits for dependents are issued for the same duration as the player.
Dependents can study without restriction, and spouses/partners are eligible for work
permits. Accommodation and minimum salary requirements apply.
Applications
Non-EU nationals must apply for their visa from outside Portugal at the Portuguese
Embassy/Consulate in their country. A fast-track protocol to accelerate the processing
of residence permits for professional athletes is available on a case-by-case basis
through the Portuguese Football Federation. After five years, the player can apply for
permanent residence and Portuguese nationality, but a Portuguese language certificate
is required.
