Brazil
Brasileiro Série A
6/200
Série A is the top-tier football league in Brazil. It is renowned for its flair, attacking
football and rich history. Founded in 1937, its competitive nature makes it one of the
most exciting leagues in the world. Since 2000, nine different champions have been
crowned.
Relative to Europe9s elite leagues, Série A was slower to commercialise, but in 2021, a
change in the law encouraging clubs to adopt a different ownership model and a
loosening of foreign player rules sparked a wave of foreign investment in clubs like
Botafogo, Vasco de Gama and Esporte Club Bahia. As such, Brazilian clubs are
increasingly attracting star talent such as Memphis Depay and Yannick Bolasie, who
joined Série A in summer 2024.
Brazil9s market for exporting football players has led to it generating nearly €1.5billion in
net profits over the past decade.
What are the foreign player rules?
Whilst Brazil is renowned for exporting its talent to Europe, boasting the highest number
of players playing abroad, there remains a significant market for international players
within the country.
Clubs can register an unlimited number of overseas players, provided they obtain a visa.
However, nine overseas players may participate in a match day squad, up from seven in
2023/24 following a unanimous vote by Serie A clubs. This marks the second
consecutive increase, as clubs previously voted to raise the limit from five to seven in
2023.
