Première Ligue
5/31
Founded in 1975, the Première Ligue is the top women9s French football league with the
top three teams qualifying for the UEFA Women9s Champions League. Olympique
Lyonnais have historically been the league9s most dominant side, winning an
extraordinary eight Champions League titles, setting the standard for women9s football
globally.
The league benefits from high investment and sophisticated infrastructure. Clubs like
PSG and Lyon invest heavily in state-of-the-art facilities, specifically for women9s teams,
making the league highly attractive to top players. Coupled with this, the French Football
Federation backs significant youth development programmes, feeding talent into both
the national team and league. Notably, France hosted the Women9s World Cup in 2019,
further boosting interest in women9s football domestically and internationally, a legacy
which the Première Ligue continues to build upon with steadily increasing attendance
figures and broadcast deals with Canal+ DAZN.
What are the foreign player rules?
The Première Ligue allows only four foreign players on the active roster. However, they
include players from all EU countries and French Territories as home-grown.
