Founded in 1968, the league consists of 10 teams (expanding to 12 for the 25/26
season) who play 18 regular-season matches before splitting into a championship round
(top five teams) and a relegation round (bottom five teams). The two mini-leagues then
play out their round-robin competitions, starting on the points total achieved in the
regular season. Currently two Serie A Femminile teams automatically qualify for the
UEFA Women9s Champion9s League. League matches can be streamed for free on DAZN.
Serie A Femminile achieved professional status in 2022, guaranteeing players and staff a
minimum salary of $26,000 a year, which was widely seen as an important step in the
league9s development. In recent years, Serie A Femminile has undergone a financial
reform process aimed at improving the economic sustainability of teams. Clubs must
meet certain financial and economic standards, and the management of the clubs is
more closely monitored to prevent insolvency or mismanagement. Teams are also
required to promote and develop youth football and obligations to invest in facilities for
young prospects. This fosters generational turnover and improves the overall quality of
women9s football in Italy.
What are the foreign player rules?
For the 2024/2025 Serie A Femminile season, a team can have a maximum of five
foreign players in its squad. Out of these five foreign players, three can be non-EU. NonEU players are those coming from countries outside the EU that do not have specific
bilateral agreements with Italy. If a player holds dual Italian citizenship, she is not
considered foreign, even if she comes from a non-EU country. A team can have all five
foreign players in its starting 11 and match-day squad. These rules are designed to
encourage the presence and development of Italian players in Serie A whilst allowing
teams to strengthen their squads with international talent.
