Immigration Rules
The National Sports Visa (D) is the most common visa for professional athletes and
coaches. The residence permit will be valid for the duration of the athlete9s contract but
limited to an initial period of two years. The number of visas that can be awarded to
foreign athletes is capped annually.
Player Requirements
A notification from the buying club to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), which in
turn informs the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI). CONI will issue its
approval to the Italian Consulate/Embassy from where the visa application is made.
A 8Nulla Osta9 (also known as a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI)) indicating there
are no objections to the applicant9s application.
Dependents
A player with a residence permit that is valid for at least one year in duration can be
joined by dependents who will be issued a residence permit equivalent to the duration of
the player9s.
Applications
Applications are normally made at the Italian Embassy or Consulate of the player9s
country of residence. This visa route can lead to permanent residence after the player
has lived in Italy for five years continuously.
