Important Financial Considerations
Spain previously offered preferential tax treatment for footballers, but
this was abolished in 2015. The top tax rate for residents is now 47%.
Non-residents generally face a tax rate of 19% if they reside in other
EU or EEA countries and 24% if they reside elsewhere.
Players should also be aware of a Spanish wealth tax that applies to
those with a net worth exceeding €3,000,000.
In Spain, players have gross contracts but are paid on a net basis,
meaning that taxes are deducted from their salaries before payment.
The likelihood of late or unpaid salaries is minimal, as players typically
receive their salaries on the same date each month, with delays being
rare.
I think that for a foreign footballer, playing in La Liga offers
magnificent opportunities. Not only is it fiscally attractive, but
it is also a good showcase to make oneself known in the world
football market. All clubs are important and attractive, but
undoubtedly, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are world leaders
that any player would want to join...
...as a person linked to Real Madrid for nine years, three of them as
President, I believe that between all of them, and with all my respect
to the others, no club in the world offers more possibilities for
personal and collective promotion to any player. This has been
shown over many years, and the reason is that our team not only
pays with money but with success, with titles, with triumphs and
with sporting glory.
